I have an exFAT SD card/USB drive that suddenly stopped showing my files after being used between Windows and a camera. I don’t want to make the data loss worse by using the wrong recovery tool or formatting it. What’s the safest and most reliable exFAT file recovery method for SD cards and USB drives?
If this is an exFAT SD card or USB drive, the main thing is to stop touching it right away. I learned that the hard way after formatting a 128 GB camera card and thinking a whole weekend of photos and videos was gone. The recovery app matters, but what you do before recovery matters more.
Don’t save anything new to the card. Don’t format it again. Don’t run CHKDSK or “repair” tools on it. Deleted or formatted data may still be sitting there, but every write gives the device a chance to overwrite the stuff you want back.
Check backups first, obviously. In my case there wasn’t one, so I went straight to recovery software. I used Disk Drill, and it got nearly everything back.
The basic process was pretty simple:
- Install Disk Drill on the computer, not on the SD card or USB drive.
- Plug the card in with a card reader.
- Select the exFAT device and run a scan. Universal Scan is usually the option you want.
- Let it finish, then preview the files before recovering them.
- Save the recovered files to your computer’s internal drive, not back to the same card.
The nice part is that Disk Drill for Windows lets you recover up to 100 MB for free, so you can at least confirm the files are recoverable before paying for anything.
One feature I’d pay attention to is disk imaging. If the card or USB stick is acting flaky, like disconnecting, crawling during reads, or showing up inconsistently, don’t keep hammering the original device with scan after scan. Make a disk image first, then scan the image. It’s safer for failing media and gives you more room to retry if something goes sideways.
For deleted camera footage, especially from drones, DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, GoPros, or dashcams, Disk Drill also has Advanced Camera Recovery (ACR). I didn’t need it much because my case was mostly photos, but it’s worth trying if you’re missing MP4, MOV, or other video files. Standard scans can miss fragmented video.
If Disk Drill doesn’t turn up what you need, TestDisk is another option. It’s free, but it’s more technical and is better for partition problems than simple deleted-file recovery.
I’d avoid DIY recovery if the device looks physically bad. If it won’t show up on any computer, keeps disconnecting, gets unusually hot, or has visible damage, stop trying. More attempts can make the recovery harder. A recovery lab is usually the better route at that point. Many will evaluate it for free, though actual recovery can easily cost a few hundred dollars or more depending on the damage.
If it’s just logical data loss, like deletion or formatting, you’ve got a decent shot. Stop using the device, recover to a different drive, and only think about repairs after your files are safe. That was the thing that saved me.
Do not let Windows “initialize,” “format,” or “scan and fix” the card just because it pops up a helpful-looking box. That is where people turn a recoverable exFAT problem into a mess. @mikeappsreviewer is right about scanning an image if the device is acting flaky, but I’d go even simpler first: try a different card reader or USB port, then make a full image of the card/drive before doing recovery. After that, scan the image with whatever decent tool you’re comfortable with. Disk Drill is fine if it previews your files before recovery, but don’t judge any tool by file names alone, especially with camera cards. Open a few previews, recover to your computer or another drive, and only reformat the SD card after you know the recovered files are actually usable.
Whether the card shows the correct capacity matters more than which recovery button you click. If a 128 GB card shows as 128 GB but the folder is empty, RAW, or asks to be formatted, that’s usually a normal software-recovery situation. If it shows as 0 bytes, 31 MB, some weird tiny size, or keeps vanishing from Disk Management, stop testing it like a normal deleted-file case. At that point the reader, controller, or NAND may be the problem, and repeated scans can just waste the remaining readable time.
I agree with the “don’t run CHKDSK / don’t format” advice, but I’d be careful about scanning through the camera itself. Use a plain USB card reader if it’s an SD card. Cameras sometimes expose storage in odd ways, and you want the computer seeing the block device directly if possible. For a USB stick, plug it directly into the computer rather than through a hub if it’s acting flaky.
For the actual recovery method, my order would be: confirm the size looks right, make an image if the device is even slightly unstable, then scan the image with recovery software. Disk Drill is fine for this if it can preview the files you care about, but preview matters more than the scan result count. A tool saying it found 40,000 files doesn’t mean much if the recovered photos are half gray or the videos won’t play. Save a small sample to another drive, open it, then decide whether it’s worth continuing. Only after that would I reformat the card, and I wouldn’t reuse it for anything important if it has already started doing surprise disappearing acts.
Expect some mess even when recovery works, especially with exFAT on camera media. You may get the photos back but lose folder structure, original names, or some video clips if the file table is damaged. That is why I would not treat “all files recovered” as the goal. The goal is “the important files open normally after being copied somewhere safe.”
The best method is boring: make the card read-only if you can, image it, then work from the image. For SD cards, the little lock tab is not perfect protection, but I’d still use it. For USB drives you do not really have that luxury, so be extra careful not to let Windows write anything to it. Even opening it in Explorer can sometimes create trash or metadata files depending on the setup. I’d avoid browsing the drive at all until the image is made.
Disk Drill is a reasonable first pass if you want a normal interface and previews, but I would not keep rescanning the original device with different settings just because the first result looks incomplete. Scan the clone/image. If Disk Drill finds previews that open cleanly, recover those to another disk. If it mostly finds generic file chunks with no names, that does not mean it failed, it may mean the exFAT directory info is gone and you are down to signature recovery. That is still useful for JPEGs and some RAW files, less pleasant for long fragmented videos.
After the files are copied out, do not “repair” the old card and trust it again. A card that randomly loses an exFAT volume after moving between a camera and Windows is cheap compared with the time spent recovering it. Reformat only after recovery, test it if you want, then retire it from anything important.
