My old Seagate external HDD is no longer showing up correctly when I plug it in, and I’m worried about losing the files stored on it. I need advice on safe Seagate drive recovery options, data recovery software, or steps to access the drive without making the damage worse.
I’d stop using the Seagate drive for now. If it suddenly looks empty, shows up as RAW or unformatted, or the files disappeared, the data may still be there. The danger is that every write to the drive can overwrite files that might still be recoverable.
First thing: unplug it and don’t let Windows “fix” it. Don’t format it, don’t initialize it, and don’t copy anything new onto it. A lot of the time, the files aren’t actually wiped right away. The file system may just be damaged, or the drive may have marked the space as free.
Also listen to the drive before running any recovery tool. If it’s clicking, grinding, beeping, spinning up and down, or making any noise that seems new, don’t scan it. Software recovery can put more stress on a failing drive. In that case, look at Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services instead. Some Backup Plus drives included limited Rescue coverage, and you can check that on Seagate’s site with the serial number.
If the drive sounds normal, then it’s more likely a partition or file system problem. Windows asking you to format it does not automatically mean the files are gone.
For a DIY attempt, Disk Drill is a reasonable option. It can help when an external Seagate drive was unplugged improperly, lost a partition, or is detected by the system but can’t be opened normally.
The safer way to do it is:
- Install Disk Drill on your internal drive, or on some other separate drive. Do not install it on the Seagate drive.
- If the files are important, make a byte-to-byte backup first. Disk Drill can create a full image of the Seagate drive, then you scan the image instead of the original disk.
- Use a good USB cable and try another port or cable if the drive keeps dropping out. Sometimes the problem is the cable or enclosure, not the actual disk.
- Scan the image if you made one. If not, scan the original drive only if it sounds normal and stays connected.
- Check the scan results with preview before recovering. If photos, videos, or documents preview correctly, that’s usually a good sign.
- Recover the files to a different drive. Never save recovered files back to the same Seagate drive while you’re recovering data.
If the drive doesn’t show in File Explorer, check Windows Disk Management. If it appears there with the correct capacity, recovery software may still be able to scan it.
After you get the important files back, test the Seagate drive with SeaTools from Seagate. Run the Long Generic Test. If it fails, replace the drive. If it passes, you can reformat it, but I still wouldn’t trust it as the only copy of anything important.
Large external drives can take a long time to scan, so let it run unless the drive starts making bad noises or disconnecting over and over. If it’s still detected and doesn’t seem physically damaged, recovery is worth trying.
Do not run CHKDSK on it.
That is the “fix” Windows likes to suggest, and it can make a recoverable mess worse by changing the file system while you are still trying to get files off. Same goes for formatting “quickly” because someone says recovery software can scan after that. Maybe it can, but you just added another avoidable step.
The angle I’d check before buying anything is the enclosure side. With older Seagate externals, the USB cable, power brick, or USB-to-SATA board can be the actual failure. If it is a desktop external with a separate power adapter, try a known-good power supply with the same voltage and correct polarity, not just any random plug that fits. If it is a portable USB drive, try a short good cable plugged directly into the computer, not a hub. A flaky enclosure can make recovery software look bad because the disk keeps vanishing mid-scan.
Disk Drill or similar tools are fine if the drive stays connected and shows the right size, but I would not judge the drive by File Explorer alone. Check Disk Management first. If it shows as the correct capacity, clone/image it if possible, then scan the clone. If it shows as 0 bytes, keeps disconnecting, or takes forever just to appear, stop treating it like a software problem. At that point the cheap DIY path can burn a lot of time and may lower the odds if the files really matter.
If the files are worth more than the drive, stop trying to make the drive usable and treat it like a one-time read job. That changes the whole approach. The goal is not to repair the Seagate, make Windows happy, or get the old external working again. The goal is to pull as much data as possible from it before it gets worse.
I agree with the warning about CHKDSK, but I would go a little further: avoid anything that “tests” the drive by reading every sector unless you already have a clone or you do not care much about the files. Some tools and manufacturer diagnostics are fine after recovery, but a long test on a failing disk can spend the drive’s remaining life proving what you already suspected.
A thing people forget is the destination drive. Before you start scanning, make sure you have somewhere safe to put the recovered files. That means a different disk with enough free space. If this is a 2 TB Seagate and you want to image it first, you need another drive with at least 2 TB free for the image, plus more room if you are recovering files separately. Running a scan for hours and then realizing you have nowhere to save the results is annoying, and saving back to the bad Seagate is a bad idea.
If the disk is detected with the correct size, I would lean toward imaging first rather than scanning the original for hours. Disk Drill can do this, and so can other imaging tools. The software choice matters less than the rule: read the failing drive as little as possible, then do the heavy recovery work on the image. Recovery scans can be very read-heavy. If the disk is already unstable, that matters.
If the drive keeps dropping out, imaging with something that can resume is better than a normal copy. A regular file copy may hit one bad area and stall forever. A recovery-focused clone/image process can skip bad spots and come back to them later. That can make the difference between getting most of the files and spending two days watching Windows freeze.
I would not crack open the enclosure as the first move unless you understand what kind of external it is. Sometimes removing the bare SATA drive and connecting it directly helps if the USB bridge is bad. Other times it creates a new problem, especially if the enclosure board handles sector translation or some kind of hardware encryption. Seagate is not always as troublesome about this as some other brands, but it is still not something I’d do casually before trying another cable, another port, another computer, and checking whether Disk Management sees the correct capacity.
There are a few different cases here:
If it shows in File Explorer but asks to format, do not format. Use recovery software or image it.
If it shows in Disk Management as the correct size but RAW, that is usually still a software recovery situation.
If it shows as the wrong size, 0 bytes, “no media,” or disconnects every few minutes, software is probably not the main answer.
If it makes repeated clicking, beeping, or spin-up/spin-down sounds, stop. That is where a lab starts making more sense.
If the files are visible but you get “access denied,” that may not be data recovery at all. It could just be permissions from an old Windows install. In that case, copying with an admin account or taking ownership may solve it, but still copy the files off before trying to “fix” the drive.
For DIY software, Disk Drill is fine as a friendly option, especially if you want previews and a less technical interface. I would still judge it by whether the drive is stable, not by the brand name on the box. No recovery program can do much if the drive disappears halfway through every scan. If you try it, install it somewhere else, scan the image if possible, and recover to a separate drive.
The boring but safest order is: stabilize the connection, confirm the drive size, image or clone if you can, scan the copy, recover to another disk, then test or reformat the Seagate only after the important stuff is off. If at any point the drive starts sounding worse, stop pushing it. Old external drives do not always fail politely.
Do not chase the drive letter.
If Windows gives it a letter one minute and loses it the next, the letter is not the problem. Changing letters, taking ownership, reinstalling Seagate software, or messing with permissions can waste time and sometimes causes extra writes. I’d only care about three things at first: does the disk spin normally, does the system see the correct capacity, and can it stay connected long enough to read from it?
I agree with the warnings about CHKDSK, but I’d be careful with the “just run recovery software” advice too. A full scan of a weak external drive can be a long, hot, ugly read session. If you have another drive big enough, the better cheap route is to make an image first. Disk Drill can do that in a friendlier way. If you are comfortable with Linux, ddrescue is the cheaper nerd option because it uses a map file and can resume instead of starting over every time the drive drops. The downside is that it is not beginner-friendly, and using the wrong source/destination can be disastrous.
A small thing people overlook during long recoveries: power settings. On Windows, turn off sleep temporarily and avoid USB hubs. If it is a 2.5-inch portable Seagate, plug it directly into a rear motherboard USB port on a desktop if you can. If it is a 3.5-inch desktop external, the power brick matters as much as the USB cable. A dying or wrong adapter can make the drive look like it has bad sectors when it is really just browning out.
Disk Drill is fine if you want previews and a normal interface, but I would not use it to “fix” the drive. Use it to copy data out or scan an image. Recover to a separate disk only. If the scan finds your folder names and previews files correctly, great. If it only finds random file fragments with generic names, that usually means the file system damage is worse, and you may get partial results rather than a clean folder structure.
If the data is irreplaceable, put the drive down before it turns into a science project. The clicking/beeping/dropout cases are where every extra experiment can reduce the lab’s odds. If the files are replaceable and you just want to try DIY, image first, scan second, save elsewhere, and do not bother “repairing” the Seagate until after the recovery is done.
