Is anyone else having issues with the Takealot app not loading properly or crashing during checkout? I’ve tried reinstalling and restarting my phone, but the app still won’t work right. I rely on it for regular orders, so I really need advice on what to try next or if there’s a known fix.
Same thing on my side last week. App froze on checkout, then crashed every time I tried to pay.
Here is what fixed it for me on Android. Maybe try step by step:
-
Check if it is a known issue
• Go to Play Store
• Search “Takealot”
• Check recent reviews. If lots of people complain about crashes or checkout, it is on their side. Then only workaround is to use the website in your browser until they push an update. -
Clear app cache and data
• Settings → Apps → Takealot
• Storage → Clear cache
• Test the app
• If still broken, go back and tap Clear data, then log in again
This fixed a weird loop for me where the app could not load cart data. -
Disable VPN or ad blocker
• If you use Blokada, AdGuard, NextDNS, etc, switch it off
• Some of these break API calls during checkout
• Try mobile data instead of WiFi once, in case your router DNS blocks something -
Check date and time on your phone
• Settings → Date & time → Use network time
• Wrong time sometimes breaks secure connections during payment -
Update WebView or browser engine
• On Android, go to Play Store, update “Android System WebView” and Chrome
• Takealot uses web views for payment screens. Outdated WebView gave me blank or crashing checkout pages before. -
Try a different login method
• Log out of the app
• Log back in using email and password, not Google or Facebook
• In some older versions, social login tokens caused weird errors in cart and checkout -
Use the website as a workaround
• Open Chrome/Safari
• Go to takealot dot com
• Log in with the same account
• Place your order there
On my phone the app crashed, but the mobile website worked fine. -
If nothing works
• Note your phone model, Android or iOS version, and app version
• In the app, if you can open it, go to Help → Contact Us
• If the app dies before that, use the website support chat or email
• Tell them checkout crashes after step X, and what you already tried
Sometimes they push a quick hotfix after enough reports.
If you share your phone model and OS version, people here might spot a pattern. Right now it looks like newer app builds on some Android versions behave badly during payment.
Short answer: yes, it’s not just you, the app’s been flaking out for a bunch of people lately.
@suenodelbosque covered most of the “do this on your phone” stuff really well. I’ll skip repeating the cache / data / WebView steps and focus on a few other angles:
-
Check if it’s specific to checkout method
Try switching payment types:- If you use a saved card, remove it and re-add it on the website, then try again in the app.
- Try COD or EFT just once to see if the crash only happens when it loads the card gateway.
- If the app crashes exactly when the payment screen loads, it’s often the embedded gateway, not the cart itself.
-
Test with a bare‑bones cart
The cart can bug out if:- You have a mix of 3rd party and Takealot-fulfilled items
- There are old promo codes or vouchers attached
Try: - Empty cart completely (on the website if the app won’t cooperate)
- Add 1 cheap, Takealot-fulfilled item only
- No voucher, no promo, no eBucks, nothing fancy
If that works, the issue is prob some combination of promos / sellers in your “real” cart.
-
Check account-specific weirdness
Sounds dumb, but:- Log in to your account on the website and see if any alerts pop up (address validation, ID docs, payment warnings, etc.).
- Make sure your default delivery address is valid and doesn’t have strange characters in the name/line fields. Broken address data can kill checkout screens in apps.
-
Try a totally different device once
If you can, log in on:- Another phone or tablet
- Or even an emulator on PC if you’re that way inclined
If your account works fine elsewhere, then it’s very likely a device + app version combo. If it crashes on another device too, then your account/cart data is corrupted somewhere on their side.
-
Don’t overdo the reinstall loop
Slight disagreement with the usual “reinstall fixes everything” logic: if you’ve already reinstalled and cleared data once properly, doing it 10 more times won’t magically help. At that point, it’s almost certainly:- A bad app build for your OS version
- Or a server-side bug tied to your account / cart
-
Collect proper info before contacting support
When you contact them, it actually helps if you’re a bit nerdy about it:- Phone model and OS version
- App version (from app settings)
- Exact step where it crashes:
“Cart > Checkout > choose address > select payment > crash before payment screen loads” - Whether website checkout works with the same items
That kind of detail gets your issue past the first-tier “restart your phone” script.
-
Practical workaround if you rely on it for regular orders
Until they fix the app:- Do all browsing and adding to cart in the app if that part still works
- Then open the website, log in, and just do the final checkout there with the same cart
Not ideal, but it keeps your normal routine going without fighting the crashing screen every time.
If you’re willing to share: phone model, iOS/Android, and exact point of failure, you’ll probably find a pattern with other folks in the thread pretty fast.
