How Do I Clear Cache On Messenger On IPhone After An Update?

After updating my iPhone, Messenger has been lagging and taking up more storage than expected. I’m trying to clear the Messenger cache without deleting important chats, but I can’t find a clear option in the app or iPhone settings. What’s the safest way to free up space and fix Messenger performance after an iOS update?

Yeah, this is a really annoying iPhone problem. Messenger can take up a stupid amount of space, especially when you’re trying to install an iOS update and your phone keeps yelling that storage is full. The frustrating part is that iOS doesn’t give Messenger a simple Clear Cache button like you might expect. You have to work around it.

The main thing people worry about is whether clearing Messenger’s cache will wipe their chats. It won’t. Your conversations, message history, and shared media are tied to your Meta account and stored on Meta’s servers. The cache is mostly temporary stuff the app keeps locally, like profile photos, stickers, thumbnails, and other bits it uses so chats load faster. Clearing that junk does not delete your actual messages.

On iPhone, you’ve basically got two decent ways to deal with it.

Option 1: Offload Messenger

This is the safer quick fix. It removes the app itself but keeps its documents and data, so you usually don’t have to deal with logging back in. It can clear out some of the bloated app files without being a full reset.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General, then iPhone Storage.
  3. Find Messenger in the list and tap it.
  4. Choose Offload App and confirm it.
  5. After that, tap Reinstall App.

Once it reinstalls, you should usually get some space back.

Option 2: Delete Messenger and reinstall it

If Messenger has been buggy, slow, or acting weird after an update, I’d go with this one instead. It gives the app a cleaner reset.

  1. Press and hold the Messenger app icon.
  2. Tap Remove App, then choose Delete App.
  3. You can also do it through Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messenger > Delete App.
  4. Download Messenger again from the App Store.

Just be aware that deleting the app will log you out. Make sure you know your password and have access to your two-factor authentication before doing it. Once you sign back in, your chats should sync back normally.

That said, cache clearing only helps so much. I got stuck in the same loop for a while, where Messenger would hit 2GB or 3GB, I’d delete and reinstall it, and then it would slowly grow again. That’s just how app cache works. Messenger rebuilds a lot of those files as soon as you start using it again, and the app can even feel a little slower right after clearing it because it has to download those thumbnails and icons again.

What helped more was checking the full storage breakdown under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. In my case, Messenger looked bad, but my Photo Library was the real storage hog. It was close to 60GB. Old screenshots, duplicate photos, burst shots, random videos, all of that stuff was taking way more space than Messenger cache ever would.

Manually cleaning photos is awful, though. Apple still doesn’t make it easy to sort your gallery by file size, so you end up guessing which random video is eating half a gig.

I ended up using Clever Cleaner. I’m usually pretty skeptical of cleaner apps because a lot of them are basically subscription traps, but this one is actually free. No fake trial, no useful features locked behind a paywall.

The best part for storage cleanup is the Heavies section. It shows your largest videos and files first, so you can delete the stuff that actually matters instead of wasting time on tiny screenshots. The Similars section is useful too because it finds photos that aren’t exact duplicates but are close enough, like five versions of the same shot. It also shows file sizes for screenshots, which makes it easier to decide what’s worth deleting.

It also processes everything on your phone, which matters if you don’t want your photo library uploaded somewhere just to be scanned.

So yeah, delete and reinstall Messenger if the app is bloated or glitchy. It can free up space for a bit and fix some weird behavior. But if your real problem is the Storage Almost Full warning, check your photo library too. Cleaning out the big junk with something like Clever Cleaner will probably save way more space than constantly fighting Messenger cache.

Expect the storage number to come back over time, because Messenger rebuilds its local data as soon as you open chats and media again. If the goal is a real cache reset, offloading may be too soft since it keeps app data, so deleting Messenger and reinstalling is usually the cleaner move as long as you can log back in.

Don’t delete individual chats or media inside Messenger thinking that is “clearing cache,” because that can remove stuff from the conversation instead of just freeing app storage. I agree with the delete/reinstall advice more than offloading if the app is actually lagging, but check two boring things first: make sure your Messenger login works, and open any important photos/files from chats and save them to Photos or Files if you need local copies. Your chat history should come back after signing in, but downloaded attachments, drafts, and weird local app state are the kinds of things that can disappear. On iPhone there really isn’t a proper Messenger cache button, so the practical route is Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messenger, note the size, delete the app, restart the phone, reinstall, then sign back in. If the size creeps back later, that’s normal, not a failed cleanup.

Lag and storage look like the same problem here, but they usually aren’t. If Messenger is slow after an update, that’s often the app itself needing a clean reinstall or the update settling in. If your phone is screaming about space, that’s a totally different fight, and Messenger cache is rarely the real villain. Worth separating those two before you start deleting things.

On the reinstall advice, I’m with @voyageurdubois more than the offload crowd. Offloading keeps the data blob intact, so if the lag is caused by some corrupted local state after the update, you just reinstall the same mess. Full delete and reinstall actually clears it. Just do the boring prep first: confirm your login and 2FA work, and manually save any photos or files from chats you actually care about. Attachments you never re-opened can vanish, and there’s no undo for that.

The photo library point from @mikeappsreviewer is the one people keep skipping, and honestly it’s usually correct. Messenger sitting at 2GB is annoying but it rebuilds anyway. A 60GB photo mess is the thing that keeps the storage warning coming back. A tool like Clever Cleaner is fine for spotting the big videos and near duplicates fast, but treat it as a shortcut for finding the bloat, not a magic fix. You still have to decide what to delete, and it won’t touch the actual Messenger slowdown at all. Two separate jobs, two separate tools.
