Honestly, I think @mikeappsreviewer nailed most of the big ones, especially with Lake Mungo (seriously, SO underrated—I’m still paranoid about every mirror). But gotta respectfully disagree with Nosferatu (2024) being all that nightmare fuel? It’s atmospheric, sure, but unless you already get creeped out by old-school gothic stuff, it’s more “cool visuals” than “sleep with the lights on” for me.
If you want guaranteed heebie-jeebies, I’d suggest trying out Hereditary (2018)—people hype it up and for once, the hype’s deserved. The family drama is devastating, the horror is relentless, and there are visuals in that movie burned into my skull forever. Also, The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016). Tight little flick that’s way nastier (in a good way) than most “dead body in a morgue” movies. Watch it alone at 2AM and tell me you didn’t jump.
For something more international, Terrified (2021/2017) (the Argentinian one, “Aterrados”) floored me. Like, genuinely felt like something evil might crawl out of my wall. Like, ever seen Martyrs (2008)? That movie didn’t just freak me out—I was basically ruined for the next week. The kind of movie where you’re questioning your life choices while the credits roll. And The Wailing (2016)? Not even sure it technically counts as “horror” the whole time, but the last act is pure dread. If those don’t deliver the cold sweats, idk what will.
